Carry power.
Move matter.
Read the response.

A conductive surface should not merely transmit electrical signals. It should also sense its environment, generate controllable fields, transport matter, and dynamically reconfigure its own function.

Priority: immediate prototype development. The starting point is a measurable tabletop interface and transport experiment. Distributed plasma control is the long-term research horizon.

01 / Project Đ

Five technologies. A shared engineering language.

TechnologyRoleCurrent research question
USB Type ĐA wide, thin, positively retained electrical interface. Can alignment, contact life and fault tolerance improve together?
Đ-RibbonMultilayer power, data, actuation and measurement surface. Can useful force and clean signals coexist within a thermal budget?
Đ-AntsSmall, independently addressed electromechanical carriers. Can a surface drive and identify several loaded carriers reliably?
Đ-HighwayA connected network for bits and physical packets. Can carriers cross junctions and recover from congestion or faults?
Đ-PlasmaDistributed electromagnetic actuation and feedback research.Which field modes are controllable and which state variables observable?

Established foundations: electrical interconnects, flex circuits, electrostatic actuation, electromagnetic induction and feedback control. Engineering extensions: the integrated connector, ribbon and multi-carrier network. Speculative hypotheses: large reconfigurable assemblies and useful plasma confinement from this particular architecture. Project-specific performance is still to measure.

“USB Type Đ” is the project’s proposed interface name. No USB-IF certification, specification adoption, or plug-and-play USB compatibility is claimed. Protocol support would require a separately designed and tested implementation.

02 / Project Đ

Wide. Thin. Positively engaged.

Thin devices need useful connections without leaving delicate contacts to carry mechanical loads. The initial USB Type Đ concept uses a card-like tongue, a guided receptacle and a separate chassis-mounted lock.

Preliminary parameterAuthor’s targetValidation needed
Width50 mmDevice packaging and lateral stiffness.
ThicknessApproximately 2 mmClarify tongue versus full housing envelope; verify stiffness and dielectric stack.
Insertion depth150 mm minimum initial targetCompare against shorter rail-guided designs; account for internal device volume.
Depth / widthAt least 3:1Measure racking, clearance, angular acceptance, friction and binding.
Contacts100–200 initiallyPitch, wipe distance, compliance, current and impedance.
OrientationReversibleDetect orientation before configuring contacts or applying load power.
RetentionPositive lockingTransfer pull, bend and torsion into chassis structure.
Electrical configurationProgrammable within compatible contact classesDedicated negotiation, returns, switching and isolation.
Durability100,000+ insertion cyclesAn endurance target; no achieved cycle count is reported.

A long guide can reduce angular play after engagement, but it can also bind more easily during insertion. For small angles, angular play scales roughly with lateral clearance divided by guide span; the 3:1 ratio alone does not determine stability. Compare equal-clearance prototypes under off-axis loads and record peak insertion force, lock load, wear and contact resistance.

Separate three functions

  • Alignment: shallow lead-in taper, long guiding surfaces, floating receptacle and replaceable wear inserts.
  • Electrical contact: compliant contacts with controlled wipe and pressure. A flared or mushroom terminal is a candidate, subject to reversible engagement and contact-wear tests.
  • Retention: screw or cam locks, rotating collars, over-center levers, spring latches, or magnetic alignment with a mechanical lock.

Confirm the whole connection

  1. Mechanical engagement detected.
  2. Continuity, shorts and orientation checked.
  3. Compatible protocol and contact map negotiated.
  4. Current-limited power accepted and monitored.

Only then issue optional audible confirmation. Offer a professional sound and an opt-in playful vocal response. A latch click alone does not confirm electrical or protocol success.

Machine-tool tapers inspire progressive centering; their self-locking behavior is not automatically desirable for an electrical connector. Taper angle, friction, surface finish and release force must be chosen together. Investigate shorter external guide rails before committing to 150 mm of internal insertion space.

03 / Project Đ

Keep a useful connection when individual contacts fail.

A connection controller discovers integrity and negotiates a map within physically compatible contact groups. Maintain a defined bootstrap/control path and dependable returns. Power contacts, shield connections and impedance-controlled differential pairs are not interchangeable simply because software can assign a label.

WorkstreamCandidate architectureWhat must be measured
Contact allocationSpare qualified lanes; pair-aware muxing; orientation map; isolated failed contacts.Short/open detection, switch resistance, leakage, remap time and faults during negotiation.
Redundant dataIndependent lanes, forward error correction, duplicate packets, fault isolation and bandwidth fallback.Bit/packet error rates, latency, bandwidth and error coverage under injected faults.
Power distributionParallel conductors with monitored branch currents, negotiated voltage domains, redundant returns and controlled disconnects.Contact resistance, current imbalance, temperature rise, inrush and interruption transients.
Ribbon continuitySegment diagnostics and alternate routes where the conductor topology actually permits them.Coverage of cuts, cracks and shorts; a severed common return or full-width cut may still stop operation.

The example “100 contacts, 50 needed” is a reduced-capability design case, not a guarantee that any arbitrary 50 contacts suffice. Demonstrate that the surviving set contains the required return paths, qualified data pairs, control signals and current capacity.

R = ρL / A;   Ploss = I²R;   Pcontacts = Σ Ik²Rk

For illustration only, a 1 m copper trace, 2 mm wide and 35 μm thick, with assumed resistivity 1.68 × 10⁻⁸ Ω·m has R≈0.24 Ω and dissipates 0.24 W at 1 A. An identical return doubles the loop resistance and loss. This arithmetic excludes contact resistance and temperature dependence; it is not a rated current or predicted temperature. A thermal model and measured boundary conditions determine the allowable load.

Power-up starts with low-energy diagnostics. Unverified conductors remain de-energized; hardware current limits, isolation and shutdown operate independently of software mapping.

04 / Project Đ

The ribbon is the infrastructure.

Keep the wide interface continuous into a flat multilayer ribbon. Develop inexpensive flex-PCB coupons first, then semi-rigid and industrial assemblies carrying power, high-speed information, control, field excitation and electrical feedback.

05Ground / shielding planeReturn reference; placement may screen useful fields
06Differential data conductorsControlled impedance and matched pairs
07Power distributionCurrent-carrying traces or bus layers
08Reinforcement / thermal layerMechanical backing and a defined heat path
Candidate layers, not an optimized stack-up. Shield location, segmentation, return currents and dielectric thickness must be solved with the intended actuation field.

Compare planar controlled-impedance lines with bundled and twisted-pair cables using the same length, signaling rate, load and shielding boundary. Evaluate differential spacing, return continuity through the connector, crosstalk, common-mode radiation, emissions and power/data isolation. Flat geometry alone does not establish lower interference.

Retract into a cartridge

A spool can deploy both a connection and a working surface. Determine minimum bend radius from the chosen laminate and fatigue tests, track winding stress and abrasion, and test heating in the wound state. Compare fixed electrical terminations with sliding contacts; a retracting mechanism needs a real accommodation for electrical rotation or cable travel. Interlock actuation to the known deployed region and detect conductor damage before reuse.

05 / Project Đ

Program force in the plane.

Electrically isolated longitudinal and transverse conductors provide a starting geometry. Compare passive row-column multiplexing, active switches at selected cells, and traveling-wave excitation. An unswitched intersection does not automatically create a confined, independently selectable force pixel: half-selected neighbors, fringing fields and parasitic capacitance matter.

TechniqueAppropriate investigationMain distinction
Electrostatic film / Sawyer-inspired planar drivePurpose-built solid sliders with patterned electrodes or suitable induced charge.Electrostatic analogue; conventional magnetic Sawyer operation is not established by the same geometry.
Traveling-wave electrostatic actuationPhased electrode patterns and matched carriers.Field phase, pitch, gap, charge relaxation and friction set motion.
Electroadhesion and capacitive sensingGripping, hold-down and position-dependent impedance.Attraction can increase friction; gripping does not by itself deliver lateral propulsion.
DielectrophoresisObjects with appropriate polarization contrast in nonuniform fields.Force depends on material, medium, frequency and field gradient.
Electrowetting on dielectricA separate liquid-droplet branch. Not the mechanism assigned to the initial dry-payload demonstration.
Resonant actuationMechanical or electrical resonators with spatial selection.Bandwidth, damping and off-target response need measurement.
Fx = ½ V² ∂C/∂x   (quasistatic, fixed-voltage capacitor model)
pnormal ≈ ½ ε(V/g)²   (ideal parallel plates)

The lateral-force model requires C(x), not only electrode area. For an ideal air gap g=100 μm at 100 V, normal pressure is about 4.43 Pa; over 1 cm² that is 0.443 mN of normal force. It is not a lateral thrust or payload rating. Surface roughness, dielectric coatings, fringing, stiction and breakdown change the real response. Use measured force-versus-gap and phase before scaling.

Published flexible electrostatic actuators demonstrate the underlying actuation family [1, 2]. Project Đ must still establish its own useful force, spatial resolution, voltage envelope and efficiency.

06 / Project Đ

Small carriers with individual addresses.

Đ-Ants are purpose-built robots intended to move without conventional wheels or onboard propulsion motors. Start at millimeter or centimeter scale. A lightweight body carries electrostatic or magnetic coupling features, a payload surface, an identifier and optionally a resonator, magnets or conductive pads. Electronics may reside in the ribbon and its drivers.

Frequency selection is one addressing layer

A unique mechanical resonance could preferentially excite a chosen carrier. The approximate bandwidth Δf≈f₀/Q makes the limits explicit: damping, manufacturing spread, temperature, payload mass and coupling shift or broaden the response. Useful frequency channels require separation based on measured off-target motion. Compare spatial selection plus frequency division with time division and coded addressing; do not infer unlimited independent robots from many excitation tones.

Make the first transport visible

Use sesame seeds, steel spheres, plastic beads, miniature electronic components, magnetic objects, or lightweight sealed containers. Measure the carrier and payload separately. Test pickup, controlled transport, positioning and release with an electrostatic or magnetic gripper appropriate to the object. A bare seed is a payload; it is not assumed to act as an engineered rotor.

Then expand to dozens or hundreds only when the drive, sensing and scheduling budgets support it. Report position error, velocity, payload capacity, energy per delivery, robot density, collision avoidance, repeatability, cross-talk and addressing bandwidth.

07 / Project Đ

A robot can become part of the road.

Investigate wedge-shaped interlocking Đ-Ants whose upper faces carry compatible electrodes, guides or attachment features. Modules could create temporary ramps, bridges, stairs, clamps, supports, fixtures and assembly platforms.

The first 3D challenge: three modules form a ramp; another carrier moves a known payload across the elevation change. Define load paths, slope, tipping margin and surface transitions. Verify stacked contact resistance, control addressing, insulation, power propagation and recovery from a displaced module. Supporting another robot is a distinct load case from moving itself on a flat ribbon.

Reconfigurable manufacturing infrastructure is the long-term application. No autonomous self-assembly or load-bearing capacity is yet demonstrated for Project Đ.

08 / Project Đ

Give each physical packet a destination.

The Đ-Highway combines digital communication and spatial actuation. A payload record can carry an ID, origin, destination, priority, carrier, route reservation and delivery status. Physical transfer remains limited by travel time, space and handling; information can travel much faster than its associated object.

Network conceptPhysical counterpart
AddressingAssociate a payload ID with a verified carrier and destination.
Routing and switchingReserve a traversable path through ribbon intersections and transfer zones.
Congestion managementQueue payloads with spacing, priorities and bounded waiting.
Delivery acknowledgmentVerify arrival and release; a command alone is not proof of delivery.
Error recoveryDetect a stalled, dropped or unobserved object; stop affected zones and reacquire its state.
TopologyTest loops and branches first; introduce 3D junctions after reliable flat transfers.

Candidate applications include laboratory samples, microelectronics assembly, precision positioning, inspection, small-parts sorting, reconfigurable fixtures, education and physical gaming. Each needs its own cleanliness, compatibility, throughput and reliability requirements.

The dipping-sauce delivery

A group of Đ-Ants transports a small sealed dipping-sauce packet across a tabletop. Weigh the packet, verify traction and load sharing, then record pickup-to-release delivery yield. It is a proposed public demonstration, chosen because the purpose is immediately understandable.

09 / Project Đ

A serious platform can have a playful first audience.

Đ-Ant Racing

Independently controlled carriers race around a programmable track.

Physical Frogger

Move a carrier through changing obstacles, with measured stopping and recovery.

Möbius Raceway

Investigate a twisted continuous ribbon. A true Möbius surface exchanges face orientation after one circuit; electrodes, shielding, seams, carrier retention and gravity require a deliberate topology.

Swarm construction

Arrange modules into bridges, ramps or towers, or compete to deliver a payload.

Electrical self-sensing is the intended tracking path. Computer vision can supply an independent ground truth during development and a practical alternative where the electrical estimate is insufficient.

10 / Project Đ

Move the field sources. Measure what changes.

Đ-Ants may carry permanent magnets, soft magnetic pieces or small current-driven coils. Rearranging them changes the field geometry and could support magnetic fixtures, manipulation, particle positioning, field shaping or experimental sensing.

Compare the measured field map with a forward model, including mutual forces, torque, saturation, thermal limits and robot retention. Magnetic particle imaging and magnetic resonance are separate research branches with different excitation, detection and reconstruction requirements. Repositionable permanent magnets alone are not an MRI system.

11 / Project Đ

Distributed fields around a central plasma region.

Đ-Plasma asks whether many independently driven electromagnetic elements can improve control of selected plasma modes. Study concentric loops, cylinders, toroids, helices, spherical approximations and nested shells. The ribbon is a modular construction candidate; high-field hardware may require entirely different conductor cross-sections, cooling, supports and conventional coils.

Field requestSelected spatial modes
Constrained driveCoupled coils and current limits
Physical responseField / plasma / structures
Electrical estimateMeasured response and uncertainty

Closed-loop research architecture: electrical measurements feed the next field command. This is a control concept, not a confinement result.

Compare distributed current loops, segmented coils, multipoles, correction coils, traveling magnetic fields and phased excitation. Explicit return paths are essential: an X–Y electrode crossing is not a closed current loop. Establish inductive coupling, driver voltage, current density, eddy currents, switching losses and structural forces.

b = G i;   V = R i + L di/dt + eexternal
pB = B² / (2μ₀)

Here b is a sampled field or modal coefficient vector and G maps coil currents i to that field for a specified geometry. Singular values of G identify weak or redundant control directions. A million intersections do not imply a million independently controllable field regions. Relevant authority depends on field amplitude, spatial scale, frequency and current/voltage constraints.

For scale only, magnetic energy density expressed as pressure is about 0.398 Pa at 1 mT and 398 kPa at 1 T. This relation alone does not establish an equilibrium, stable topology, confinement time or fusion yield. Thin flexible PCB traces are not assumed to generate fusion-relevant confinement fields.

Established plasma-control systems already use feedback, correction coils and multiple diagnostic families [4, 5]. The Project Đ hypothesis is a potentially useful implementation of distributed actuation and self-sensing, not the invention of feedback itself. Start with empty-space field mapping and conductive surrogates; a plasma experiment is a later, separately specified gate. Fusion confinement and net energy remain unvalidated long-term objectives.

12 / Project Đ

Use the conductors to listen as well as act.

The core design goal is a clean X–Y conductive structure with as few separate sensors as possible. Sense through the actuation conductors using terminal voltage/current, back EMF where applicable, self- and mutual inductance, complex impedance, capacitance, resistive changes, induced voltage, resonance shifts and transients.

“Self-sensing” still needs measurement electronics: switching, ADCs, current/voltage measurement, references, calibration and suitable isolation. It means reducing separate sensing structures, not obtaining information without an instrument.

MeasurementPotential observableAmbiguity to resolve
Position-dependent capacitance / drive currentSlider position or overlap in a calibrated geometry.Gap, humidity, dielectric changes and multiple carriers can mimic position.
Resistance and dissipationConductor/contact drift; temperature with calibration.Strain, contact wear and temperature may change resistance together.
Induced voltage / mutual inductanceChanging magnetic flux; perturbations from conductive or magnetic objects.Self-drive feedthrough, coupled circuits and eddy currents can dominate.
Resonant frequency / phaseCarrier identity or local interaction state.Payload, damping and neighboring resonators shift the signal.
Distributed electrical measurementsA limited reconstructed state under a validated forward model.Different physical states can produce indistinguishable terminal data.
i = d(CV)/dt = C dV/dt + V dC/dt
v = Ri + dλ/dt;   λ = λ(i, x, environment)

The first relation explains a capacitive motion signal; the second includes self-induction, mutual coupling and external flux. Back EMF is not a universal name for every kind of electrical feedback. Separate the known excitation from the response being estimated.

Compare alternating drive/measurement windows with simultaneous small-signal probes, synchronous demodulation and frequency separation. Quantify dead time, feedthrough rejection, noise, drift and estimator error under actuation. Prior work on drive-current sensing in electrostatic film motors is directly relevant [3].

Active electrical tomography

Investigate electrical impedance tomography, magnetic induction tomography, system identification, model-based or Bayesian filtering, and machine-learning-assisted inverse estimation. Form a sensitivity/observability model and report rank, conditioning, bandwidth, null spaces and uncertainty. Validate on known objects and withheld operating conditions before removing reference diagnostics.

Electrical measurements may constrain selected current or field modes in a specified plasma geometry. They do not establish full temperature, density, composition or 3D motion from back EMF alone. Independent diagnostics remain necessary during validation to determine what is actually observable; ITER’s use of magnetic, optical and other measurements illustrates these distinct roles [4].

13 / Project Đ

Close the loop within the hardware’s authority.

A candidate architecture combines FPGA waveform generation, distributed drive electronics, high-speed ADCs, digital signal processing, a physics-based model and real-time state estimation. Compare model-predictive control, adaptive identification and machine-learning-assisted optimization against a simple deterministic baseline.

Set the control period from the relevant motion or plasma mode, actuator L/R dynamics, sampling delay and measured phase margin. Include acquisition, filtering, estimation, communication, computation and switching in the latency budget. Separate scheduling of robots from the fast waveform loop.

Every command must respect voltage, current, temperature, duty-cycle and observability limits. Independent hardware protection enforces the operating envelope if software fails. AI can optimize within a valid model and available feedback; it cannot supply missing field strength, confinement time or measurements.

For a plasma-control claim, report the named mode, disturbance, diagnostic, open-loop baseline, closed-loop improvement, energy cost and failure envelope. Compare like-for-like with established feedback methods rather than presenting controller complexity as evidence of performance.

14 / Project Đ

Flexible where it moves. Rigid where it must hold shape.

The supplied brief identifies flexible, semi-rigid and rigidized variants. The following material trade study completes that architectural direction without assigning an unmeasured performance rating.

Variant / materialCandidate roleDecision variables
Flexible polyimide / copper laminateRoom-temperature coupons and retractable working surfaces.Bend radius, cyclic strain, electrode wear, dielectric loss and copper fatigue.
Semi-rigid reinforced ribbonMetal backing or structural inserts with replaceable flex sections.Stiffness, neutral axis, thermal expansion, insulation and local flex transitions.
Rigidized arrayMechanically supported conductor panels held at a defined geometry.Alignment repeatability, mounting loads, cooling path and replaceable modules.
Copper and aluminumConductive traces, bus layers or heat spreaders according to process.Electrical/thermal conductivity, mass, oxide/contact behavior and manufacturability.
TitaniumPotential structural reinforcement.Do not treat it as equivalent to copper or aluminum for electrical or thermal conduction.
Magnetic versus nonmagnetic backingA chosen part of the electromagnetic circuit.Permeability, saturation, hysteresis, eddy currents and shielding of intended fields.

A conductive backing may improve heat spreading while attenuating time-varying fields through induced currents. Slots, segmentation and material selection belong in the field model. Magnetic backing may concentrate some fields and distort others. Determine layer order through combined electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal analysis.

Close the heat balance from conductor, contact, dielectric and switching losses to the actual ambient or coolant boundary. Test straight, bent, wound and stacked conditions. Plasma-adjacent structures additionally need a specified vacuum, outgassing, temperature and radiation envelope; room-temperature laminate tests do not establish that qualification.

15 / Project Đ

Begin with one interface and one moving payload.

Proposed first work session: October 19, 2026. This is a development plan, not a claim that a prototype has been built or a calendar booking. Keep the interface mock-up and actuator coupon independent so each can answer one question.

  1. Freeze a testable first revision. Sketch the 50 mm tongue and the 150 mm guide, plus a shorter rail-guided alternative. Define the gap, carrier mass, electrode pitch, diagnostic signals and instrument ranges. Select a limited test envelope from component ratings.
  2. Build an unpowered mechanical coupon. Make two alignment/lock samples. Measure insertion force against offset and angle, side-load stiffness, release force and binding. Choose a guide design from recorded results.
  3. Measure one actuator cell. Use a rigid supported electrode coupon and purpose-built dry slider. Measure capacitance versus position and gap, force versus excitation, and phase-dependent motion. Compare against the simple force model.
  4. Drive, then listen. Log terminal current/voltage alongside independent position measurement. Test whether an electrical estimator tracks motion under withheld loads and different gaps; keep error and uncertainty visible.
  5. Add a visible payload. Demonstrate pickup, transport, positioning and release before trying multiple carriers, a junction or a sauce packet.

Self-sensingCalibrated error against independent measurements and held-out conditions.Different positions/states remain indistinguishable or drive feedthrough obscures the signal.
Multiple carriersSelected versus unselected motion, collision rate and delivery yield.Resonances overlap or addressing cross-talk defeats independent control.

Before each run, choose numeric acceptance thresholds appropriate to the task; retain unsuccessful trials and measurement uncertainty. The 100,000-cycle connector life, high-speed data rate, payload capacity and plasma-control capability remain separate targets until measured.
